Amanuensis Monday: Check This Guy Out ---William H. Goodrich

At the end of my last post, Looking For Clues On The Life Of Ula Goodrich Jones, I mentioned how I found some interesting things on the brother in law of Dr. Oscar Dunn Jones.  Dr. Oscar Dunn Jones was my 1st cousin 3x removed and was married to Ula Goodrich.

Ula Goodrich Jones's brother William H. Goodrich was born November 22, 1872 in Washington, D.C. When I was looking on the census for Ula, I found William in the years 1880 and 1900 but he seemed to fall off the radar from there. Where could he have gone?

Well it turns out that he was a bit of a traveler and that he worked in the arts.  While doing a search under the header of Immigration and Travel on Ancestry.com, I found quite a few records.

William H. Goodrich left the United States in 1900 and was working as a music hall professional in England! Wow! How cool is that?!  This consular certificate is stamped on the top with the date of April 24,1915 and it appears to have been valid for a period ending April 8th 1916. I found another consular certificate for William for the following year which expired on April 4, 1917. It said essentially the same thing as the first one.

It's interesting to note that the mother's residence changed from the earlier certificate. Here it shows she was residing at 914 T Street, Washington, D.C.

Now I know why I couldn't find him on the census after 1900. The following records yielded something even cooler. Pictures!  These are from another Ancestry.com collection, U.S. Passport Applications 1795--1925.

Interesting things to note from page 1:

I desire a passport for use in visiting the countries hereinafter named for the following purpose:
       British Isles                     Residence
(Name of Country.)                                             (Object of visit.)

       France                            Theatrical business
(Name of Country.)                                             (Object of visit.)

It appears from this that William Goodrich was residing in England while doing theater work in France.

I took the liberty to clean the image up a bit.
