Dorothy Thelma Pierce

Amy Johnson Crow, the author of the blog No Story Too Small, is the host of the 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks Blog Prompt series. If you are not familiar with the project please click on the following link:  Announcing 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks: 2015 Edition.

Week 35 (August 27 – September 2) – School Days: Many kids have returned to school by this time. What do you know about your ancestors’ school days? Do you have any yearbooks? Have you found him or her in a local school census?

I decided to go along with this week's prompt because I love this yearbook picture I found of a cousin of mine and this seemed like the perfect time to share it. The picture is of my 2nd cousin 2x removed, Dorothy Thelma Pierce Bond.

Here's how Dorothy and I are connected on my maternal line.

Bristow/Brister Harris was my 3rd great grandfather and he had two families. The family headed up by Rose Anderson resided in Wilmington, NC while the one headed up by Amy Brown resided in New Bern, NC. You can learn more about my 3rd great grandfather in the following post:  52 Ancestors: #22-- Bristow Harris Or Was It Bristoe, Brister or Bristol?  I am a descendant of Bristow's New Bern family while Dorothy Thelma Pierce Bond was a descendant of his Wilmington family.

This picture of Dorothy I think shows a lot of her personality. I never knew her but she seems like she was a real down to earth person. She probably had a real good sense of humor. I love her smile.

Dorothy Thelma Pierce was born on December 31, 1923 in New Rochelle, NY based on information found on her U.S. Social Security Application. Her parents were a Bertha F Lawson of Ossining, NY and a Henry C Pierce from Boston, MA. The family resided at 119 Winthrope Ave in New Rochelle, NY in 1930.

By 1935, the family had moved to Henry Pierce's hometown of Boston. This is where Bertha Pierce did most of her growing up.

Yearbooks can provide helpful details about the lives of our ancestors. On the page where I found her yearbook picture I also found this.
